Bio

Mark Beaumont has made a career of World firsts and records to over 130 nations & territories, made documentaries over 15 years for the BBC, GCN & CNN, as well as publishing 5 books.

A record breaking round the world cyclist, broadcaster, adventurer and hugely engaging keynote and after dinner speaker, Mark tailors his speeches to meet each clients’ brief.  The amazing stories of his adventures make Mark’s speeches inspirational and memorable whilst providing practical advice and learning points on such topics as Leadership, Goal Setting, Resilience, Team work and Motivation.

A committed fundraiser and young adventurer, at just 12 years Mark took his first cycle across Scotland raising £3000 for charity, he repeated the same challenge as an adult and raised over £100,000 by running and swimming across the country.

In 2007 Mark achieved a place in The Guinness book of records for his first circumnavigation - the fastest circumnavigation by bicycle, covering 18,296 miles in 194 days and 17 hours.  He raced across 20 countries in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and North America, overcoming immense physical and mental challenges.  The journey was tracked in an online BBC documentary.

His next adventure took place in 2009/2010 when Mark cycled 13,080 miles, solo and supported.  Over nine months, the expedition from Anchorage, Alaska to Ushuaia, Argentine involved climbing the longest mountain range on the planet.   The journey was covered by the BBC, in a documentary ‘The man who cycled the Americas’.

Mark undertook his next challenge by sea in 2011 when he rowed the Arctic to the 1996 location of the North Magnetic pole in the Nunavut territory of Canada, further north than anyone has rowed before, 800 miles inside the Arctic Circle.

In 2012 Mark took his adventures to the Atlantic Ocean where he was a crew member on ‘Atlantic Odyssey’. During an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for rowing the Atlantic from Morocco to Barbados, the ship capsized just 500 miles from the finish.  Mark and his team survived a terrifying near death experience and were rescued after 14 hours in the water.

Mark presented for the BBC during the Queen’s Baton relay – the main curtain raiser for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.  The baton embarked on a journey around 70 nations and territories.

Mark holds the record for cycling from Cairo to Cape Town, the length of Africa.  He completed the incredible challenge in 2015 in a record time of just over 41 days, breaking the previous record of 59 days.  He covered 6,762 miles in some of the most dangerous terrain in the world.

Nearly 10 years after his first circumnavigation, Mark took the Guinness World record for cycling an 18,000 mile circumnavigation in just 78 days.  Inspired by Jules Verne’s novel ‘Around the world in 80 days’, he cycled an average of 240 miles per day, pushing himself to the limit.  Through sheer grit and determination and suffering enormous physical challenges, he crossed the finish line in Paris, beating the previous record by an incredible 82 days.

In 2019 Mark was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to sport and charity in the Queen’s New Years honours.  In the same year he climbed a 6893 metre high volcano in Chile with a bike on his back, enduring extreme altitude and inhospitable terrain. He then rode back down the 300 kilometres to the Pacific Ocean. The Longest Descent documentary is available on GCN.

Mark has written a series of books about his circumnavigations and cross continent expeditions, together with a podcast and book about long-distance cycling, where he provides advice on nutrition, mind-set, training and equipment – EnduranceImpact is a business podcast which puts a spotlight on people and organisations that have a pioneering spirit through a series of interviews.

With a background in business and economics, Mark is a partner of Eos Advisory, an early stage Innovation Fund and Syndicate, backing science, engineering and technology companies, as well as working in private equity with originating deals and scaling mid-market businesses.

Optical Success Academy – Yorkshire Conference November 2020

“Mark was fantastic.  He was our most highly rated speaker and his presentation was inspiring and genuine with real practical takeaways for everyone.  Mindset is such an important part of success and our group were delighted to hear Mark’s insights on the thinking and the strategic planning behind world class performance.  I’d highly recommend Mark as a speaker and he was a pleasure to work with.”

Solid Solutions Conference, October 2020

“The concept of delivering a virtual keynote speech was initially met with pessimism across the team at Solid Solutions. However, it became very clear within just a few minutes of meeting Mark (on a virtual meeting) that his style, character, and remarkable achievements would keep the audience engaged.

One of the key reasons for inviting Mark to speak to our customers, was his unique mixture of record-breaking achievements, alongside his business acumen and experience. During the speech Mark delivered a well-balanced mix of inspirational anecdotes, whilst seamlessly relating his challenges and achievements to the world of business.

Our Virtual event was a great success and Mark’s speech was a stand-out highlight from the day. We received lots of great feedback and without hesitation, Solid Solutions would recommend Mark to speak at your event, virtual or in-person.”

AG Barr – Online conference November 2020

“Mark was the guest speaker at our first virtual Leadership Event. Whilst we were a little anxious about delivering a virtual session to motivate, engage and inspire - we needn’t have worried. Mark was incredibly professional, working with us in the days before the event to make sure he fully understood the brief as well as the audience - and the tone we were looking for.

On the day itself, Mark gave a fascinating account of some of his exploits, all the while keeping it relatable for our people. After his presentation he took part in a Q&A session where there were lots of questions asked, a clear sign that Mark had engaged the group. It was a very successful day, and Mark’s contribution went a long way towards making it so.”
